How do you add those temporary floating windows seen in commercial sites?

Many sites now showcase a floating eye-port (splash screen) which can be an advertisement for any limited amout of their time before disappearing. I don’t know what this is known as but I’d like to know how it is done.
I’m sure splash screens aren’t a huge hit, but my web page takes a few seconds to load up and I need to to provide a brief window which pops up upon first visit and the quickly disappears after a matter of seconds.
Anyone really know what this technique is named and how to do it
Thanks,
Paul

Getting a few solutions, it could possibly be a webpage opened having a set width in addition to height, position or anything else..

Or getting a floating part (http: //www. yahoo. co. uk/searchhl=en& q=floating layers& btnG=Google Search& meta=)

Your second item (http: //www. sivamdesign. com/scripts/dwld/lys_pop. html) looks like you could customize it to cease afte x mere seconds (using a setTimeout).
