Help with applying stylesheets

hey, im just coming into web design applying xhtml and css and im by using this program called Araneae. It doesnt have hundreds of fancy features that many editors do, and i favor it clean. I am thinking about starting a web site for the business I improve. I am unsure what step one is. I would like to create a web site that allows customers to acquire items online.
