What pixel width should I use for my site

Now i am curious to listen to responses here, a number of you are makers, some just gadget owners who search furiously. I’m debating getting someone to broaden my website (width with menu) by about 20px, possibly as much as 35px since it can be much thinner as compared with most fixed width websites. It utilizes a " 960 pixel" standard for design and style with 940px for the main content containers and 10px on each side regarding " gutters" for space and some other spillover of effects (like ribbons, and so forth. ) I had no idea until recently even what the " 960gs" grid technique was.
