In a word… no. jQuery is approximately the simplest, most lightweight way you can apply this. If it’s causing these kinds of effect, then the client’s PC has to be upgraded. It’s of which simple. There is no CSS/XML implementation to try and do this.
As long as the image execution goes, the best thing you can apply is set the width and height within your image container to check the size within your first image and also overflow: hidden.
