Setting up a mysql database

I’ve got a notion for developing a web site that is centered around promoting golf, golf travel, world of golf courses, and the actual selling of golf products online. Rookie question from a (less than) rookie designer (MySQL, APACHE, PHP)

Just found a book upon MySQL, APACHE and PHP and it may not be really clear to the relationship among the three. I’m considering designing a data source driven web-site and I feel that I have a decent handle on the MySQL and PHP will be but I’m not really sure if We would like to install APACHE at my PC. Need help doing a practice website.

We have dabbled in HTML previously and I’ve played with a good number of content management systems for example wordpress, joomla, e107, including a few more. I’d prefer to step up my web page design skills and stop determined by CMS for every one of my sites.
